Former public defender mentored by Justice Breyer.
President Joe Biden nominated Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson for Associate Justice to the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday. Judge Brown currently serves in the District of Columbia U.S. Court of Appeals. The nomination is to fill the vacancy that will be created when Justice Stephen Breyer retires at the end of the court’s current term.
President Biden stated, “I promised the process would be rigorous, that I would select a nominee worthy of Justice Breyer’s legacy of excellence and decency. Someone extremely qualified.”
Judge Jackson served as a law clerk in Justice Breyer’s chambers after law school, then served as a public defender. Prior to her current position on the bench, she worked on the U.S. Sentencing Commission, with a focus on proportionate sentences and reducing in sentencing disparities.
